It was a couple hours later on the same day. We were still in the same park, too. Rick had insisted I join him on a quick run around the place. I’d hedged and whined until he’d promised to buy me some breakfast after we were done.

Free breakfast? A lot of things were worth a free breakfast.

The run ended up being quite the workout. Rick was a fast little bugger when he wanted to be, which kind of surprised me. He’d never seemed the overly physical type before. Apparently, he did this whole running thing every morning. Not at this park, of course. He said he had a treadmill he used at his place most of the time, but still. Running every day for fun? What was up with that?

I was never going to understand some people.

A bagel with extra cream cheese, though? That, I would always understand. Rick had bought me one from this little stand that also sold lattes. I skipped the latte—had always been more of a tea drinker—but I ate up the bagel like it was the only food I’d gotten in three days.

While that was a bit of a stretch, I had to admit I was pretty famished by the end of that run.

Isaiah didn’t seem too bothered by the run, either. Lucky duck. Maybe he ran for fun, too, though. I could totally see him as the type to do it.

Right as I was downing the last of my bagel, my phone buzzed with an unknown number. Usually, I ignored those—mostly they were sales calls or people asking about my car warranty for my non-existent car—but I brought it out and checked it anyway. It was a text message.

Grinning, I opened it, totally thinking of some witty reply I could send to the would-be salesperson. I was surprised to find that it was from Misty’s boyfriend instead.

Be there in a flash, the text read.

“Sit tight, fellas,” I told Rick and Isaiah. “Our ride will be here in just a moment.”

They shot me doubting looks, but I just smiled back at them.

Like clockwork, almost exactly sixty seconds later, a bright flash of light and flames formed in front of us, blinding me for half a second better than the sun ever had.

Out of the flames stepped none other than half-demon Val. He was tall, over six feet, and had dark hair and gray eyes. He was wearing a black, velvety shirt and a pair of black jeans. I wasn’t sure why he liked the tall and dark motif so much, but it was his choice, so…

A small, ferret-like creature with wings was perched on his shoulder.

“Val!” I exclaimed, getting up to greet him in a big hug. Val didn’t seem to mind the hugs like Rick did.

He embraced me warmly. “Damian! Good to see you, bud. I see you got my message?”

I snickered a little. “Sure did. There in a flash? Good one.” I was always one to appreciate a good pun.

Val shrugged. “What can I say, sometimes I have a flair for the dramatic.
